Step away from the keyboard

... and go outside.
I have a couple of New England acres that will, when conditions are just perfect, grow a flower we call lady slippers. I spent a little time in the yard today, finding the most profuse crop I have ever seen. They are in the orchid family, a protected species in Massachusetts.

Ack! I loves me a paphiopedilum! I didn't realise those little goodies were wild natives of the northern U.S., though. In German the flower is also colloquially called Venusschuh (Venus's Shoe). Yay!

Oh, I wandered over here from Pandagon, in case you keep track of such things.

Ja zicher! Aren't they gorgeous? I usually get one or two but this year they got a good wet spring and popped up all over the shady corner of the lot. I remember them being pink but obviously this years crop runs more of a lavender. No two quite the same.

[I watch the traffic logs as much as someone who makes their living from ads...its obsessive. So, yes, I knew I was getting about 10 times my usual weekend traffic and most of it for the link to the flower picture.]
